چکیده

Currently, a common difficulty in diagnosing failures within Pratt & Whitney’s FlOO-PW-100/200 gas turbine engine occurs when a fault in one part of a system, comprising an engine, airframe, test cell, and Automated Ground Engine Test Set (AGETS) equipment, is manifested as an out-ofbounds parameter elsewhere in that system. In such cases, the normal procedure is to run AGETS self-diagnostics on the abnormal parameter. However, because the self-diagnostics only test the specifed local parameter, it will pass, leaving only the operators’ experience and traditional fault isolation manuals to locate the source of the problem in another part of the system. This paper describes a diagnostic tool (Le., AGETS MBR) designed to overcome this problem by isolating failures using an overall system troubleshooting approach. AGETS MBR was developed jointly by personnel at Pratt & Whitney (PW) and United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) using an Artificial Intelligence tool called Qualitative Reasoning System (QRS).

A Model-Based Reasoning Approach to System Fault Diagnosis

This paper presents a novel model abstraction and representation approach for the application of model-based reasoning (MBR) to helicopter powertrain diagnostics. Although the basic principles of MBR are well understood, its application to specific domains, especially in mechanical systems, has been restricted due to insufficient model fidelity. The traditional vibration analysis approach has b...

Case-Based Reasoning for Gas Turbine Diagnostics

General Electric used case-based reasoning for gas turbine diagnostics at their monitoring and diagnostics center in Atlanta, GA. This application had requirements that included accuracy, maintainability, modularity, parameterization, robustness, and integration of the system into an existing infrastructure. The CBR system has a modular “plug and play” architecture to facilitate experimentation...

Prototype-Based Reasoning: An Integrated Approach to Solving Large Novel Problems

Two important computational approaches to problem solving are model-based reasoning (MBR) and case-based reasoning (CBR). MBR, since it reasons from first principles, is especially suited for solving novel problems. CBR, since it reasons from previous experience, is especially suited for solving frequently encountered problems. However, large novel problems pose difficulties for both approaches...

HELIX : An Application of Qualitative Physics to Diagnostics in Advanced Helicopters

An expert system for diagnosing faults in the power train of a twin-engine gas turbine helicopter has been developed. The system, designated HELIX (HELicopter Integrated expert), performs diagnostic reasoning based on a hierarchical qualitative model representing the major power train components and the physical principles that govern their interaction. The approach represents a promising techn...
